In 1993, Kunming Medical University (KMU) initiated a diploma program in nursing. This was one of the first institutions offering nursing higher education in Yunnan Province and southwest China. This paved the way to set an undergraduate program in nursing, leading to the establishment of Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree in 1998. With the development of the program, the School of Nursing was established in 2005. The Program Nursing has been successively awarded as Yunnan Key Program, Yunnan Characteristic Program, Cooperative Training Program for Outstanding Talents in Yunnan Province, and Yunnan First-class Undergraduate Program. The program Midwifery was approved to set in 2018 and is one of the second batch of institutions in the country to set the program. In 2019, the nursing program passed the Ministry of Education's undergraduate nursing program accreditation. The school is the first and only institution in Yunnan Province that passes the accreditation. School of Nursing was awarded as the First-class Undergraduate Nursing Construction Site by the Ministry of Education in 2021. At the same year, it was approved by the Ministry of Education to run a Joint Educational Program with Mahidol University, Thailand, which is the first approved Sino-foreign cooperative program in medicine in Yunnan Province.
In 2011, the school got an authorized academic master’s discipline in Nursing, which is currently the only authorized discipline in Yunnan Province, and in 2014, it got an authorized professional master’s discipline in Nursing. Nursing has been awarded as Key Construction Discipline in Yunnan Province, and Key Construction Discipline of the 12th, 13th and 14th Five-Year Plan at the university level.
School of Nursing has 2,161 full-time undergraduates and 28 postgraduates. There are 37 faculty members, 26 full-time teachers and 10 full-time counselors. Among the full-time teachers, 6 have doctoral degrees (including 2 students), accounting for 23.1%, 14 have master's degrees, accounting for 53.8%, 11 have senior titles, accounting for 42.3%. There are 12 teachers graduated from other universities, accounting for 46.2%, 5 teachers graduated from abroad, accounting for 19.2%, and the school has 8 master's supervisors, accounting for 30.76%. The School of Nursing has 230 part-time faculty members, including 204 in directly affiliated hospitals and 2 in non-affiliated hospitals. The high-level school is leading the development of higher nursing education in Yunnan Province. The school team upholds the spirit of cooperation and innovation, and strives to explore solutions to health-related problems in the field of nursing. At present, the school hosts many national, provincial and university-level research projects of various types every year, especially in the field of healthy aging research which has been awarded as the university's innovation team construction. The school has made several breakthroughs in this field.
School of Nursing attaches importance to the cultivation of students' practical ability. It has built the largest, advanced and well-equipped nursing skills training center in the province with a construction area of 4042.17 square meters and assets of more than 15 million yuan. It fully covers the skills training functions related to each course of nursing. At the same time, the center also gives full play to its role of resource sharing and social radiation, and has hosted many nursing skills competitions and nursing teacher training courses at various levels, which has played a positive role in promoting the synergy of nursing education and exchange between institutions.
Relying on the university's network of clinical practice teaching bases, the school builds its nursing clinical practice teaching bases currently consisting of the province's 9 top grade-A tertiary general hospitals, 1 grade-A tertiary psychiatric hospital, and 8 community hospitals, which fully meets the practical teaching needs of students.
Relying on the advantages of its location, the nursing program has steadily opened up its education to the outside world. It has established good and long-term cooperation with many university nursing schools in Sweden, Australia, the United States, Japan, Finland and Thailand, actively carrying out foreign academic exchanges, teacher training and student exchange. In the past five years, more than 200 nursing teachers and students have gone to Thailand, Sweden, Japan, the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia and other countries for further training and study.
The Nursing program adheres to the school's mission of caring for the frontier, loving the people, nurturing the people and serving the people, actively engages in and serves the national and Yunnan development strategies, and it is always committed to training high-level and high-quality nursing talents for the frontier areas.
